Speaking of long-distance trails, Italy is well known for its Piste Ciclabili, or bike paths. The lakes area includes routes around the countryside near Iseo as well as the new path that is being built all around Lake Garda.  Other options head into the mountains, showcasing the stupendous beauty on offer in Italy.  Check out the fields and forests in Aosta Valley, or commune with the cows in Alto Adige.  Why not add a cycling experience to a trip to the coast?  Le Marche offers a beautiful, dedicated path along the seashore. Or head to Livorno in Tuscany!  It has some great bike friendly hotels, and you can ride you bike right into the sandy dunes and go for a swim.

Crystalline, Eco-Friendly Beaches

Astoundingly beautiful beaches are found all over Italy, with its enormous coastline and numerous islands. If you want to promote a healthy environment you can look for “Blue Flag” beaches, awarded specifically for being clean and eco-friendly.  Found all over Italy, here are a few to check out: La Maddalena in Sardinia, Bergeggi on the Riviera di Ponente in Liguria, Sperlonga, not too far from Rome, Maratea in the far corner of Basilicata, and Campomarino, on the small slice of the coast found in Molise.  Consider exploring one of Italy’s coastal nature reserves.  Try the stunning Porto Selvaggio in Puglia, or the deep blue waters of Zingaro, not too far from Palermo in Sicily

Excursions on Italy’s Vast Waterways

Italy is also blessed with numerous lakes, lagoons, and rivers.  They make great spots for Italy nature experiences, including the chance for boating and rafting. Boating on a smaller lake can be a true joy.  Try sailing on Iseo in Lombardy, a boat tour in Trentino-Alto Adige to see the underwater church tower, or even a paddle boat ride on a tiny in Basilicata.  The Adriatic lagoon presents the chance for kayaking near Venice or taking a small rowboat out onto the waters around Comacchio in Emilia Romagna.  For a bit more adventure head to Italy’s rivers and waterfalls for some rafting…Marmore Falls in Umbria is one great option out of many!

Get Wild with Natural Hot Springs

Another possibility for water lovers is the hot springs, or terme, found all over Italy.  While many of these are at posh resorts and wellness centers, outdoor enthusiasts might prefer the wild hot springs that dot Italy’s landscape.  Tuscany is the place to go for most of these, but there are also wonderful rustic springs in CalabriaSicily and Lombardy

Journey in Winter and Explore in the Snow

Another reason to travel to Italy’s mountains is for skiing and snowshoeing. Surprisingly, there are even options for snow activities in central and southern Italy. The mountains of Tuscany offer beautiful wilderness for snowshoeing.  Or head to the high mountains in Abruzzo and Molise for abundant snow in the middle of nowhere. There’s nothing like the alps in winter, home to a vast network of ski resorts, as well as spots for folks who want to get away from it all.  The Friulian Alps present cross country ski options from high mountain villages.  And the mighty Dolomites are great for remote adventures in the snow.  For a special experience, find a rifugio in Gran Paradiso National Park in Piedmont and Aosta Valley, and tuck in for a stay.

Rough it (Or Not So Much) at a Rifugio

For incredible Italy nature experiences, why not spend the night? Rifugi, or mountain huts, can be found throughout the country, but are most common in the northern mountains.  Some can be reached by car, while others are strictly hike or ski in. Bivacchi, such as those found in Piedmont and Trentino-Alto Adige, are extremely rustic and free to use.  Others, like these in Lombardy and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, offer simple meals and sleeping accommodations. While still others, similar to these in Veneto and Alta Badia, feel almost like mountain chalets, with full restaurants and bars.

Encounter, and Help Protect Local Fauna

For those who would enjoy coming into contact with wildlife there are many nature reserves and conservation organizations around Italy that give travelers the opportunity to learn about and experience animals and birds from each region. Some of these are marine areas such as those in Liguria and Calabria.  You can also view flamingos in Emilia Romagna, or venture to Friuli-Venezia Giulia to see wild white horses.  The National Parks also offer a huge array of opportunities to see wildlife, with one highlight being the elusive chamois of Gran Paradiso National Park

Unique Italy Nature Experiences: Magnificent Caves

For something different, why not go underground?  There are literally thousands of caverns and grottoes in Italy just waiting to be explored.  The Frassasi Caves of Le Marche are the most well-known in Italy, Other “Cathedral Caves” can be found in Umbria and Sardinia.  The Castellana Caves in Puglia display incredible shapes and colors. A unique activity at Castellana is to attend the theatrical spectacle centered around Dante’s Inferno in the caves. If you’re looking for something a bit more placid, there’s always the stunning boat trip to the Blue Grotto of Capri in Campania

Sumptuous and Otherworldly Gardens

Italy’s gardens are stunning!  While short on thrills, they are some of the most spectacular and unique in the world.  For sheer beauty, explore Villa Taranto on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Parco di Sigurta in Veneto, or the charming Giardini di Ninfa in Southern Lazio.  For something out of the ordinary, check out the fascinating La Cutura in the Salento section of Puglia.  Here, you’ll find one of the most phenomenal collections of Cacti you could possibly imagine.  For a treat for the kids, the Parco dei Mostri in northern Lazio offers a world of mythical monsters hidden within its green corridors.
